Reading 1 – Speculative everything
some important key points for successful critical design as follow:
- Authors propose a kind of design that is used as a tool to create not only things but ideas.
- design is a means of speculating about how things could be—to imagine possible futures.
- open debate and discussion about the kind of future people want (and do not want).
- Speculative Everything based on cultural, others’ works, philosophy and political theory.
Reading 2—Questioning the “critical” in Speculative & Critical Design
summarise some of the problems associated with the contemporary critical design movement:
Q: “What is this obsession with class systems? The UK may have its financial problems but most of us stopped obsessing about these divides in the distant past.”
So answering Auger’s pressing question — “What is this obsession with class systems?” —, well: we are obsessed with class systems because we can’t help it. Because, in contrast to most of the practitioners in the field of SCD, we do not have the privilege of not thinking about issues of race, class and gender. As a specific way to provoke contemporary people’s thinking, the target audience should not be narrowed. The critical thinking should be face to everybody by different works.
